‘Dark Shadows’ Trailer: Where Is It, Tim Burton?

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

With just 77 days until the film’s release, we’re still waiting for even a taste of the campy Johnny Depp feature.
By John Mitchell

Today is February 24. Tim Burton’s anticipated summer blockbuster adaptation of the vampire soap opera “Dark Shadows” is set to hit theaters on May 11. There are 77 days between now and the release of the film. And we still don’t have a trailer — not even a teaser.

Special-effects-heavy blockbusters opening much later in the summer, including July’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” have already debuted multiple trailers to satisfy the bloodlust of fans hungry for just a taste of the movies they are counting down the days for. But we “Shadows” devotees have been kept waiting in the dark too long, not unlike Barnabas (Johnny Depp) locked up in a coffin and hidden away in the Collins family mausoleum.

But lo, what’s that in the distance I hear? Buzz that consumer surveying of two potential trailers, a shorter teaser and longer full trailer, took place earlier this week. To be fair to all involved, by “buzz” we really mean “Internet gossip,” but it’s pretty much in line with what we’ve been able to pull together about the film from interviews with Burton and Helena Bonham Carter from late last year — namely that the director is injecting the film with an undercurrent of dark comedy.

The GIF warriors over at Oh No They Didn’t got word on Tuesday from a variety of tipsters that testing on varied trailers was underway. And the buzz is … good? We’ve long been hopeful that the film would be “vintage Burton.” By that we mean dark, weird and kind of funny, and from what the ONTD tipsters are saying, that’s exactly what we may be getting. At his best, the director was capable of a balancing act few others would dare attempt. He made us care about a very odd man who had scissors for hands, after all, and laugh at the strange and colorful suburban world around him.

Much of the comedy in the film appears to stem from Barnabas’ trouble acclimating to the modern world (well, 1972) when he is aroused from his centuries-long slumber by Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley). According to tipster Ross2287, Depp’s delivery is spot on when he hears a car for the first time and calls out, “Show yourself Satan!” Later, during a fight with Eva Green’s evil witch Angelique, Depp earned laughs from the audience when he requested she “strategically place your wonderful lips upon my posterior and kiss it repeatedly.”

More choice one-liners arise when Barnabas is introduced to his descendants. Based on these accounts of the alleged in-the-works trailers, it’s looking like the always lovable Chloe Moretz (who plays Caroline Collins) may well be a scene stealer. When Depp’s Barnabas is introduced to her and finds out she is 15, he can’t help but warn, “And no husband? You must put those birthing hips to good use at once lest your womb shrivel up and die.”

Later, in what is said to be the full-length trailer, Depp sees television for the first time and is astounded, asking, “What sorcery is this?” before he rips the back panel off and yells, “Reveal yourself, tiny songstress!” Moretz then looks to her 200-year-old vampire cousin and says, “Are you stoned or something?”

Is any of this even true? Looks like we’ll have to wait and see, though we decided to run with it because it’s all we have. Do you hear that, Tim Burton? It’s all we have. When it comes to this trailer, we can’t help but repeat one of Depp’s lines from the alleged mystery trailer: “Show yourself!”

Do you think the ONTD tipsters have it right? Is Tim Burton readying a dark comedy with his “Dark Shadows” adaptation? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @JohnMitchell83 with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!

‘American Idol’: You Had Me, Then You Lost Me

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

After 11 season, this faithful viewer might be trading ‘Idol’ in for new models ‘The X Factor’ and ‘The Voice.’
By Gil Kaufman

I’m a loyalist at heart. Back in the day, I watched “The X Files,” the original “Beverly Hills, 90210″ and “The O.C.” until the bitter end, convincing myself that my patience would be rewarded well after the shark had jumped.

But after slogging through another interminable pair of “American Idol” cut-down episodes Wednesday and Thursday, I think I’m finally throwing in the towel.

I’ve been there since episode one with “Idol,” reveling in the joy of Kelly Clarkson’s win, cheering Ruben Studdard to his well-deserved crown and scratching my head when clearly inferior champs like Taylor Hicks, Lee DeWyze and Kris Allen took the top prize.

Just a week before the season 11 live shows start, though, “Idol” has lost me, perhaps for good. The bottom line is that the show just feels like it’s on auto-pilot, from the bored looks on the faces of celebrity judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez to the predictable plotlines and not-so-clever editing tricks intended to keep our interest up through the early rounds.

It was bad enough a few weeks ago when an entire episode of the group rounds went by without any discernible footage of, you know, singing. The biggest plot point that week was the exploitation of a sick teenage girl passing out and falling off the stage, which was used as a cruel cliffhanger.

On Wednesday night, we got yet another rehash of the previous audition rounds along with mostly truncated looks at the singer’s final Las Vegas performances (most of which were bland, if not downright boring) before they had to make the long walk to the judgment chairs. Thursday night was more of the same. Sole original judge Randy Jackson seemed to run out of creative ways to torture the painfully eager singers with purposely vague platitudes about how hard it is to cut them at this point, purposely mangling his words to keep them on the edge of confusion.

Watching this spectacle, I just asked myself, “Do I even care if Heejun Han or Reed Grimm make it?” “Do I need to see Jermaine Jones cry again?” “Who is Chase Likens and why haven’t I even seen him up until now?”

In my long experience with “Idol” and writing about music, none of them seem like winner material, in the same way that such paint-by-numbers soul mamas like Jen Hirsch, Elise Testone, Erika Van Pelt, Shannon Magrane and stage mom’d Brielle Von Hugel fail to excite. And making Adam Brock — a weepy white dad who brags about singing like a black woman while using his dead grandfather’s handkerchief as a pity prop at every turn — a cliffhanger for Thursday night’s episode just seems pointless. This guy has no chance to win, and if he does, well, “Idol” has way bigger problems.

In fact, the only contestant in the mix at this point who seems even halfway relevant in today’s music biz is skunk-mohawked former castoff Colton Dixon, but he hasn’t gotten nearly as much love as Phil Phillips, whose twitchy Dave Matthews impersonation has already grown unbearably irritating. Even 15-year-old Eben Franckewitz seems promising, but I can already tell his “story line” will be that despite lots of experience on the musical-theater stage, the judges are going to hammer him for his nerves.

Before Wednesday night’s episode aired, I was already firmly in line with Entertainment Weekly columnist Mark Harris, who wrote an opinion piece in the February 24 issue about how he was switching sides. “The opening weeks of ‘Idol’ traffic in humiliation and tears — the neediness of the young, desperate to be extracted from the mob; the familiar weariness of the judges; the talentless clowns pimped as sneerworthy sideshows,” he wrote. “But the opening weeks of ‘The Voice’ are about hope and discovery.”

In essence, he said, we’re at a tipping point where NBC’s upstart show is winning the race not by copying the template of “Idol,” but by purposely running in the other direction. The “Voice” judges are relevant musicians of today from varying genres with a sharp, entertaining rapport that crackles and brings a fresh energy to the show. That show starts from day one with good to great singers from varying backgrounds, singing mostly contemporary chart hits, who are eager to get help from those who are still charting today. Meanwhile, the “Idol” judges are riding the fumes of their fading careers as they continue to struggle to apply their hard-earned lessons in the music biz to mostly teenage strivers who can’t relate to their mother or father’s favorite singers.

The leading contestants so far this year on “Idol” fall into two or three predictable camps: overreaching, throwback R&B belters, quirky imitators of no-longer-relatable stars or ultra-twangy country gals. Where are the edgy R&B divas like Rihanna? The cute boy singers like Justin Bieber? The hip-hop-influenced Drake wannabes? Hell, where are the Carrie Underwoods who can deftly mix pop and country? “The X Factor” and “The Voice” eagerly embrace singers of every color, style and persuasion. So are you telling me that there was not one woman of color out of the tens of thousands who auditioned worthy of the semifinal round? Have we become a nation of (almost exclusively) blond, female Mariah/Christina copycats?

Just look at the talent that has already been signed in the wake of the first “Factor” season: a legitimately powerful soul diva in winner Melanie Amaro, a fascinating redemption story in rapper/crooner Chris Rene, contemporary R&B singer Marcus Canty, white blues man Josh Krajcik, high school cutie Rachel Crow and buzzed-about teen rapper Astro, any one of whom could legitimately blow up.

Meanwhile, the first 24 semifinalists put through by “Idol” this week are almost without exception as blandly interchangeable (and old-fashioned) as Lopez’s spangly tops. And the “surprise” extra boy to be named later is one of the most tired tropes in the “Idol” dream factory bag of tricks.

Sure, it’s very early in the process and nobody knows what could happen. But if you recall, even in the audition stage it was already clear that eventual season-eight runner-up Adam Lambert was destined to be one of the most exciting, unusual performers in the show’s history. It’s not like season-one “Voice” winner Javier Colon has set the world on fire, but at least that show focuses on mentoring and nurturing talent of any age, shape and style, rather than serving up cookie-cutter slot fillers.

The sense of hope, discovery and optimism that Harris said permeates “The Voice” is wholly lacking on “Idol,” which feels more and more like a dated reality competition and less like a singing showcase. Tear-jerking backstories aside, it’s hard to see how any of these singers is going to win America over, not to mention make a case for idolatry or even above-average chart success.

It’s been a fun ride, “Idol,” but unless you can prove to me that you can read the writing on the wall, I’m afraid my TiVo is going to be reprogrammed to NBC from now on.

Lady Gaga Responds To Born This Way Topping ‘Pretentious Albums’ List

Saturday, February 25th, 2012

‘Eye roll,’ Gaga tweets after music mag NME blasts her latest LP.
By James Montgomery

Earlier this week, British music mag NME set out to determine the “10 Most Pretentious Albums Ever.” The list includes (genuinely pretty terrible) conceptual fare like Kiss’ Music From “The Elder,” Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music and, uh, Lady Gaga‘s Born This Way, which somehow bested all competitors to nab the #1 spot.

How? Well, as NME writer Priya Elan wrote, “On Born This Way, [Gaga] seemed to believe in her own hype, convinced she had a message to share. Cue an album of unwieldy ‘anthems’ that couldn’t mask the fact that the fun had left the building.” Elan singled out the thumping “Scheiße” as BTW‘s most pretentious moment, adding, “Did electroclash die for this?”

Snap. As you’d probably expect, those jabs had Gaga’s Little Monsters on the offensive, and they launched an all-out attack on Elan in the comments section of NME‘s website. But Gaga herself remained above the fray — for a while, anyway.

On Thursday night, she took to her Twitter account to hit back at NME, a publication that’s certainly been no stranger to charges of pretentiousness over the years.

“Oh the irony of winning ‘Most Pretentious Album Ever’ from none other than NME. *Eye roll,*” Gaga wrote. “I might laugh forever [and] then return to narcissism.”

Double snap. Having sufficiently eye-rolled her way through the situation, there’s been no further comment from Gaga about the list.

NME, of course, has since turned the exchange into a separate story, one which, for whatever reason (word count?), includes recent comments Gaga made about bulimia … and spaghetti. *Eye roll.*

DMX Barks At Drake, Rick Ross, Jay-Z In Radio Interview

‘I don’t like anything about Drake,’ DMX tells New York’s Power 105 on Thursday.
By Rob Markman

DMX never holds back, and during a Thursday morning (February 23) interview on New York’s Power 105, the Dog spoke his mind — freely. X, who is performing a homecoming concert Thursday night in New York, spoke with the Breakfast Club personalities, Angela Yee, DJ Envy and Charlamagne, opening up about his career and giving his take on some of rap’s newest stars.

The Dog let loose his collaboration with MTV’s 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC Machine Gun Kelly on “I Don’t Dance.” While Dark Man X praised MGK, saying that he was better than 80 percent of the rappers today, he wasn’t as impressed with Drake. When asked if he liked Drizzy, X responded, “No,” without any hesitation. “I don’t like anything about Drake,” he stated freely. “I don’t like his f—ing voice; I don’t like the sh– he talks about; I don’t like his face; I don’t like the way he walks. Nothing. I don’t like his haircut.”

It didn’t seem that DMX had a personal problem with the Young Money standout, but Drake clearly isn’t his cup of tea. Neither is Rick Ross. “I’m just not impressed, man,” he said when asked about his opinion on Rozay’s lyrical prowess.

X also went on to reveal that he turned down a deal with Ross’ Maybach Music Group. He received interest from the label while he was in prison last year, but he didn’t think MMG was a good fit. “I appreciated the offer, but I really couldn’t see it happening like that,” he said.

DMX is getting ready to release his next LP, Undisputed, sometime this year, though he wouldn’t commit to the rumored March date. In his new record deal, all X says he’s looking for is the proper promotion and creative control. It’s a push that he didn’t feel he got during his last few years on Def Jam when his former Murda Inc. rhyming partner Jay-Z was the company’s president. “When he first got the job he gave me a call like, ‘Yo Dog the inmates are running the building, we good,’ ” he said of a conversation that took place between him and Jay some years ago as DMX was prepping his sixth album for the label.

In DMX’s mind, his former collaborator felt threatened by the onetime rap superstar. “How do you listen to a whole album, pick a single, shoot a video, then don’t know,” X questioned about Jay’s presidential motives at the time. “OK, I see what’s really good; you’re trying to eliminate the competition.”

Were DMX’s comments out of line? Leave your comment below!

Justin Bieber Reveals Release Dates For New Singles

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Bieber’s Far East Movement collabo drops next week, followed by his first Believe single in March.

Fans who want to hear some new music from Justin Bieber won’t have to wait much longer. The singer has revealed that he’s set to drop not one but two singles in the very near future.

First off, Bieber’s collaboration with Far East Movement, which also features Party Rockers LMFAO, drops on Tuesday. The Twitter announcement for the release included the hashtag “#LiveMyLife,” perhaps a hint as to the name of the song.

The song’s producer, RedOne, recently spoke to MTV News about the track. “I did a few songs with Far East Movement, and one of the songs … to me, it’s a smash,” he said. “And Justin sang the chorus. It’s a really good song, and I think people are gonna dance like crazy to it.”

In addition to the release, Bieber revealed that the first single off his forthcoming album Believe will drop in March. “And u guys keep asking. so yeah. my single is NEXT MONTH>#BELIEVE,” he wrote. Little else is known about the song, but given the caliber of talent he’s been recording with for the album of the same name, it’s certain to be something his Beliebers will look forward to.

For the album, he’s hooked up with everyone from Pharrell and Rodney Jerkins to Drake, Lil Wayne, Timbaland and will.i.am. “The only conversation we’ve had about Justin’s album that we’re about to do is it’s really important that it’s the proper transition, because we’ve seen him [with] ‘Baby,’ now we’re watching him grow up,” vocal producer Kuk Harrell told us. “And we can’t just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition. There’s a record in between.”

It’s an exciting time for Bieber. As he continues to up his professional game, he’s also about to celebrate a personal milestone: The teen star will turn 18 on March 1.

‘Survivor: One World’: The Women Cop Out

Friday, February 24th, 2012

‘There’s nothing that the women are getting right at this point,’ former ‘Survivor’ player Rob Cesternino says of the dysfunctional Salani tribe.
By Josh Wigler

It’s a battle of the sexes on “Survivor: One World,” but over at the women’s camp, the conflict is no longer divided along gender lines alone.

On this week’s “Survivor,” the women of the Salani tribe lost both the new do-it-yourself reward challenge as well as the crucial immunity challenge, which required navigating a giant balance beam with multiple human obstacles in the way. Was it a complicated challenge, or simply one that wasn’t conducive to the “assets” that Salani brings to the table? The question is open to interpretation, but the result is not: The men of Manono dominated once again, leaving the women to vote out 51-year-old former Los Angeles police officer Nina Acosta, who is technically the first person voted out of the game following last week’s “Survivor” history-making medical evacuation.

Is it too late for the dysfunctional Salani tribe to pull it together? Did the team make the right choice in voting out Nina, a stronger player on the outside of an alliance, over 22-year-old Kat Edorsson, a weaker competitor than Nina but potentially more loyal to the women of Salani? MTV News tackles these questions and more alongside longtime “Survivor” commentator and two-time player Rob Cesternino, regularly described as “the smartest player to never win the game.”

MTV: Man, Salani just does not have it together, Rob. They’ve lost three challenges in a row. They’ve already lost a teammate to a medical evacuation. They just voted another one out. It’s a tribe divided into two alliances, but you can barely even say that, because the people in these alliances don’t even want to be in alliances with each other. It’s a mess of a situation. Is there anything that they are getting right?

Rob Cesternino: There is nothing that the women are getting right at this point. This is not exactly a strong start. [Laughs] Things don’t look good for their tribe. But this is the game of “Survivor,” and things could always turn around on them. Things are always worse than they appear after losing basically two challenges and having one of their players get medically evacuated. They could always come back and win a bunch of challenges. Unlikely, but still very possible.

MTV: Going into Tribal Council, [producers] did their best to make you think that Kat might get voted out, but you really had to figure it was Nina going home. There are arguments for getting rid of each of them. With Nina, she’s on the outside — she’s not part of the numbers of the tribe’s core alliance, where Kat is. But on paper, Nina may be more valuable to this tribe than Kat in both the challenge and life-experience departments. What do you think? Did Salani get it right? Was the right person sent home?

Cesternino: Whether they got it right or they got it wrong, the history of “Survivor” is always that when an alliance is faced with voting out a stronger member of the tribe who is not in their alliance, or the weaker tribe mate who is in their alliance, I think 99 percent of the time they’ll vote out the stronger person who isn’t in the alliance. That’s just the way it goes. You want to keep the numbers on your side. They could have kept Nina and kept their numerical advantage, but Survivors always keep the loyal person. It never goes the other way.

MTV: It’s also hard to judge based on one challenge. Kat did not do well in that challenge, but who knows how she’ll do tomorrow?

Cesternino: And it’s not so much that Kat is weak. It’s more that Kat is dumb. [Laughs] Her intelligence may not be as much of a factor in future challenges. Strength-wise, she’s probably on par with Nina. But on a common-sense level, she’s flatlined. I don’t know what Kat was thinking [during the immunity challenge]. She compared herself to ["Survivor: Nicaragua" winner] Fabio before the game began, and she’s perfectly playing that game. She’s not a threat, she’s well liked, she’s fun around camp. … It’s the kind of thing where nobody will ever suspect her. They’ll keep her around. But who’s to say she won’t win in the end? You reach a point with “Survivor” that you’re so not a threat that you are a threat. She’s exactly that.

MTV: While we’re talking about Kat, it seems like a good time to bring up the immunity challenge she helped to bungle. We had only seen one challenge this season prior to this week’s episode, but that challenge was so hardcore that a contestant broke their arm in multiple places and was forced out of the game early. This week’s challenge wasn’t easy either. The women’s tribe had an impossible time getting started, but even the men had some trouble.

Cesternino: In these men-versus-women seasons, production likes to throw out balance beams as the great equalizer. Though in the case of the challenge this week, it didn’t play out that way. While the men were able to get across the balance beam and take their time, I think that because of the, ah, “surgical enhancements” of several of the female players, there were just some turns that were not physically possible. [Laughs] I don’t know if production really thought that through when they tested the challenge. I don’t think they had any testers wearing size-F sports bras.

MTV: Let’s talk about the do-it-yourself reward challenge. It’s not the first DIY challenge we’ve seen on “Survivor,” but we already know that “One World” is going to feature a whole lot more of these. You know, I really enjoy the “One World” twist, and I like the men-versus-women angle, but the jury’s out for me on these DIY challenges. What did you think?

Cesternino: I have a feeling that (host) Jeff Probst’s agent was recording these do-it-yourself challenges to plan for Jeff’s next contract negotiation. [Laughs] Honestly, I don’t know that the Survivors hosting their very own challenge is really working for me. I understand that Jeff might need a day off, but get a Jeff Probst understudy to host the challenge. I’m not saying Jeff can’t have a day off, but the challenge needs a host. Just some guy. Get Smiley off the street. Even if it’s a disembodied voice narrating the challenges! [Laughs] I was just very confused watching a challenge without someone yelling, “Women! Looking good!” or “Women! Having all sorts of problems!” [Laughs] I can’t image after one DIY challenge that anyone’s feeling too good about this, but let’s give “Survivor” the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps they can tweak this going forward.

MTV: The Colton Chronicles continue this week. Colton is a man without a country: He doesn’t feel comfortable with the guys at Manono, he feels comfortable with the women at Salani, but they don’t feel comfortable with him. Colton breaks down a bit in this episode, but by the end, he’s developed an alliance with others on his tribe by showing them his secret immunity idol. You were down on Colton last week, Rob, but how do you feel about him after this week?

Cesternino: I think Colton is still a hot mess. [Laughs] I don’t know what he’s doing. He’s completely spinning out. All the men are pissed at him, all the women are pissed at him. The only thing he has going for him is that hidden immunity idol. I don’t normally agree with players showing the hidden idol to everybody, but it seemed to turn the tides for Colton a little bit. He’s got this misfit alliance that he’s put together. I like that he’s finally associating with some of the men — he’s plotting within his tribe. It’s a step in the right direction. That being said, at the challenge, when he was complaining about Leif… he doesn’t like Leif! That’s a core member of his misfits alliance! I don’t know about Colton. But maybe he’s hit rock bottom, and he’s going in the right direction now. A touch of the crybabyitis, though. Episode two tends to be the breakdown episode for people.

MTV: Once again, like last week, let’s end by looking at who’s playing the game right. Who do you like out there after two episodes?

Cesternino: We didn’t see much of the men this week outside of Colton. But the women’s alliance, even though Sabrina calls herself the winner, it seems like the tandem of Kimberly and Chelsea are calling the shots. I really like that dynamic: They aren’t the people who identify themselves as leaders of the tribe, but a powerful two-person alliance where you can trust the other person … that’s the best possible scenario to be in on “Survivor.” I think Kimberly and Chelsea have that. As long as they don’t get separated by some shuffling of the deck, I think that those two could go very far in this game.

‘Walking Dead’ Creator Bites Into Image Expo

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

MTV News speaks with Robert Kirkman about what fans of the undead can expect from Oakland, California, convention.
By Josh Wigler

If the worst should happen and a zombie apocalypse occurs this weekend, there’s no safer place in America to be than Northern California: “Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman will be in Oakland as part of the inaugural Image Expo, greatly increasing your survival odds if a pack of flesh-hungry walkers swarms the scene.

“The Image Expo is an Image-centric comic book convention, so all of the guests have something to do with Image Comics,” Kirkman told MTV News during a recent phone interview. “All of the Image founders will be there, as well as new creators who are doing comics with Image this year: Ed Brubaker, Brian K. Vaughan, we have Jonathan Hickman coming here … all kinds of cool guests.”

Running from February 24-26, the first-ever Image Expo makes its debut during the 20th anniversary of Image Comics. Kirkman, a longtime Image reader and current partner at the company, considers the anniversary a milestone achievement for a publisher that originally launched with a very uncertain future.

“There were a lot of naysayers back in 1992 when the company was formed, saying they’d be gone within six months,” Kirkman said. “For Image to still be around, still generating new ideas and content and bringing in new creators into the industry, taking a lot of chances on people who’ve never been published before, that’s one of the things that Image does the best. It’s really cool that this vision of a company created by creators for creators, that offers the greatest creator-owned deal in the industry and gives everyone the kind of freedom every creator wants to have, is still standing.”

Indeed, Image has plenty of new creators to brag about going into 2012. Kirkman identified “Captain America” writer Ed Brubaker’s new thriller “Fatale” as one of the books he’s most excited for this year. “Y: The Last Man” scribe Brian K. Vaughan’s upcoming sci-fi epic “Saga” is another of Kirkman’s must-read books in 2012. But Kirkman is equally excited about the arrival of some new creative voices at Image this year, including the company’s onetime PR and marketing coordinator Joe Keatinge, who launches a new series titled “Hell Yeah” in early March.

“There are a lot of things he’s involved in that I’m very excited about, but the fact that he’s launching a creator-owned book, ‘Hell Yeah,’ is really great,” Kirkman said about Keatinge’s upcoming projects. “Image is the place that brings in new talent and shepherds them into the comics industry, and I see big things from this Keatinge kid.”

Of course, Kirkman has plenty of his own books he’s bringing to the table as well. During Image Expo, Kirkman will champion some of his fan-favorite titles including “Walking Dead” and “Invincible,” as well as his new comic “Thief of Thieves” that debuted from his Skybound imprint earlier this year.

“It’s about a guy named Conrad Paulson who lives a double life as an international thief named Redmond, who is rumored to be the greatest thief who ever lived,” Kirkman said of the book’s premise. “But he has a problem: he chose his thief life over his personal life, and he has an estranged ex-wife and a son he’s never talked to. He has a ton of regrets. The book is about him trying to get his life in order and turned around, turning his back on his career as a thief… but finding that he is completely and utterly unable to do that. He’s completely addicted to the thrill of stealing objects. He tries to work around that by working out a way to steal for the greater good.”

Taking a page from his “Walking Dead” television experience, Kirkman is implementing a writer’s-room approach to “Thief of Thieves.” Rather than writing the book all on his own, he’s working alongside an unknown number of other writers — including “Morning Glories” scribe Nick Spencer — to add even more voices to his latest creative endeavor.

“It’s been a lot of fun working on ‘The Walking Dead’ in the writer’s room. I’ve grown to respect that method of crafting stories, so I figured I’d give it a shot on a comic book,” Kirkman said. “It’s cool to sit down with other writers — currently unnamed, but we’ll be making announcements soon — and plotting out the story in the same way we’d be doing it on a television show. Having those different brains in the mix, people with different backgrounds generating different ideas and adding to the stew of the story we’re putting together is very cool. When you sit down and read the first 25 issues of ‘Thief of Thieves,’ you’re going to see all these different ideas at work. It’ll be cool to see how it all comes together.”

Kirkman fans traveling to Image Expo to take a bite out of the writer’s biggest hit to date, “Walking Dead,” won’t walk away disappointed either. The convention will host variant editions of “Walking Dead” #94, as well as a select number of limited-edition “Walking Dead” watches. And, of course, there’s that little AMC series to consider as well.

“We’ve got a panel called ‘Walking Dead’ Live where ['Talking Dead' host] Chris Hardwick will be interviewing myself and [actors Norman Reedus and Steven Yeun] together on a panel,” Kirkman said. “We’ll get to do that live before a panel audience, which should be pretty exciting. We’ll also have autographs, signings, all that cool stuff. We might even play ping pong with people. I cannot confirm that, but we’ll see. We’re going to be having all kinds of fun!”

Santigold Will Take Stage With Umbrellas At Woodies

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Santi tells MTV News she plans to use ‘fun props’ when she unveils her new single, ‘Disparate Youth,’ at the March 15 show.
By James Montgomery

Santigold was announced Thursday (February 23) as the first performer at the 2012 mtvU Woodie Awards, and from the sound of things, she’ll be bringing her A-Game. Or at least her props.

“The show now involves some umbrellas; we try to use fun props onstage and make it look like a real show with, like, props and a lot of cool choreography,” she laughed. “We have a lot of fun onstage, and we’ll definitely put that into the show.”

Santi may be the first artist confirmed for the Woodie Awards — set for March 15 in Austin, Texas, during the South By Southwest music festival — but she’s far from the only name attached to what has quickly become a daylong event. For the first time, the show will expand to include an open-air music festival, which kicks off at 2 p.m./1 p.m. ET/CT and features an eclectic bill that includes Fun., A$AP Rocky and just-announced additions like Chiddy Bang, Kimbra and Ed Sheeran.

It’s a move that reflects the anything-goes ethos of SXSW, which is just one of the reasons Santi agreed to take the stage at the Woodies … that and the fact that she’s got previous Woodie-related experience.

“I played the Woodies several years ago [in 2008], and it was a lot of fun. The show is a great platform for artists, all kinds of artists, and I like that it is happening during SXSW,” she said. “I love it down there, love all the different bands you get to see. When they asked if I’d like to perform this year, I didn’t even think about it. I just said ‘yes,’ it was a no-brainer.”

During the show, Santi will be unveiling her brand-new single, “Disparate Youth,” the first taste of what fans can expect on her upcoming Master of My Make-Believe album (due this spring). It’s sure to be a highlight, though, for her Serbian fans, it’ll also be nothing new.

“We’ve been doing ‘Disparate Youth’ for a while — I’ve been working on these songs live; I tried to work on these songs as much as I could outside of the country,” she said. “I think the first time I performed ‘Disparate Youth’ was in Serbia. It was cool. It went over pretty well, I’ve got to admit.”

The Woodies Festival will be held on Red River and East First Street in Austin and is open to both SXSW badge-holders and music fans alike. The entire fest will stream live on Woodies.mtvU.com and leads up to the awards themselves. On Sunday, March 18, the best moments from the Woodies will be broadcast during a 30-minute special airing on MTV and mtvU at 8 p.m. ET.

Voting is also under way in all Woodies categories, and remains open until March 9. Voting in the Breaking Woodie category will continue during the live show March 15. Fans can cast ballots in all categories through the Woodies website, on their mobile phones at M.MTV.com or by texting VOTE to 66333. Standard message and data rates may apply.

The Woodies invade SXSW on March 15 with the Woodies Festival. The best of the 2012 mtvU Woodies will air on MTV and mtvU on March 18 at 8 p.m. ET.

Demi Lovato Teases March 6 Special On MTV

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Singer tweets out a photo of her wrists emblazoned with her ‘Stay Strong’ tattoos and the date ’3.6.2012.’
By Jocelyn Vena

What does Demi Lovato have up her sleeve?

We’ll know in good time. But for now, the singer/actress tweeted out a photo teasing a super-secret special project she is working on with MTV. The photo features her wrists, emblazoned with her tattoos that read “Stay Strong.” The picture offers up a couple of hints: the date “3.6.2012″ and the hashtag #staystrong.

“Lovatics-I wanted to tell you FIRST about a special I worked on with @MTV,” she tweeted. “It premieres March 6th at 10pm!! #staystrong.”

Lovato first showed off the ink back in March 2011, just two months after she left an Illinois treatment center to deal with personal issues including an eating disorder and cutting.

“The journey that I went through and the support of my fans was so meaningful to me that I wanted to thank my fans in a way that I know can never be forgotten,” the singer said in 2011.

“It’s something that my fans were actually drawing on their wrists while I was still in treatment,” she explained about the significance of her tattoos. “Some people even got tattoos of it, so I wanted to show you guys that I will never forget the support that you guys gave me.”

Since returning to the spotlight, she has focused on her music career, including her 2011 album, Unbroken, which launched her empowering hit single “Skyscraper.” Her next single is “Give Your Heart a Break.”

Lovato has become a voice for young people struggling with personal issues. In December, she visited and spoke to patients at the Timberline Knolls Center, where she had received treatment.

“To be able to share my story and let them know that it gets easier … Life is beautiful … you are worthy of it,” Lovato said. “Please say a prayer for all of those struggling with eating disorders, self-harm, mood disorders and substance abuse.”

Tune in to MTV on Tuesday, March 6, at 10 p.m. for Demi Lovato’s top-secret special!

LMFAO Make No Apologies In ‘Sorry For Party Rocking’ Video

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

RedFoo and Sky Blu throw epic house party in cartoon-like clip featuring David Hasselhoff.
By Jocelyn Vena

LMFAO
Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images

First they had us shufflin’. Then they introduced us to the wiggle. And for their latest video, for the club-thumping track “Sorry for Party Rocking,” the guys of LMFAO are throwing the ultimate cartoon-like house party.

The clip, which premiered Monday night, opens with an older couple (played by LMFAO’s Sky Blu and RedFoo) arguing over the ruckus of a nearby house party, hosted by LMFAO’s very own Sky and Red. When the older gentleman makes his way over to the party to complain, he gets the door slammed in his face. Inside the party, the guys and their colorful crew are wearing their animal-print and neon-colored clothes, dancing and drinking the night away.

When they refuse to shut down the party, the older man calls the police. But instead of shutting it down, they join the madness. So does everyone else: from pizza delivery guys and sexy nurses to truck drivers and David Hasselhoff (who appeared with the guys onstage during their 2011 American Music Awards performance). And, while the older man is trying to shut the party down, he finds his wife inside enjoying the festivities. Who could not be charmed by a house party thrown by Red and Sky?

As the video begins to come to a close, RedFoo falls over from all the good times. When he is whisked away by an ambulance, he drops his phone, which is later picked up by someone who begins to party rock to “Anthem.” Christopher “Kid” Reid (from Kid’N'Play, who know a thing or two about house parties) arrives at the scene as the party seems to be winding down to complain about all the noise.

In the final seconds, the video very quickly references the hospital scene that opens the group’s very memorable “Party Rock Anthem” video, where they fought off a zombie-like dancing epidemic. Perhaps this party had something to do with the origins of the plague in that video.

Directed by Mickey Finnegan (who directed “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy and I Know It” as well as clips for Cee Lo Green and Soulja Boy), the whole video takes place in a world made up of cardboard cutouts and animations, making it a surreal escape. The video includes smooth dances moves from former “America’s Best Dance Crew” dance crews Quest Crew and the Beat Freaks.

What do you think of LMFAO’s new video? Leave your comment below!

All the votes have been tallied, and the results are in: Rick Ross is MTV News’ Hottest MC in the Game.

MTV News began the list last week with Wale at #10. A new rapper was revealed each day until Sunday’s “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” debuted on MTV2. So how did the Bawse react to his crowning achievement?

“I just got the news that I was voted the game’s Hottest MC, and man, it really means a lot to me, of course, but it’s an honor,” Rozay told MTV News from an L.A. recording studio. “It’s something I’ve been watching, something I’ve been a fan of forever. Of course, MTV, they run the game. MMG, we’re here. Shout-out to the whole team.”

Ross topped the list, which also included Drake, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Meek Mill, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa and Wale. Each MC was judged based on our Hottest criteria, which included impact, buzz, sales, lyrics, swag and the intangibles.

Rozay surely met all of the above. His impact on the game is undeniable, with his Maybach Music Group and key guest appearances on songs like Meek Mill’s “Ima Boss” and Lil Wayne’s “John,” Ross maintained a consistent buzz all year long. His Self Made, Vol. 1 compilation album debuted at #1 on the Billboard rap albums chart. Lyrically, Rozay was a force as well, and his swag was through the roof. In January, the Bawse lit up the streets when he dropped his free 19-song Rich Forever mixtape.

When it was all said and done and MTV’s Hip-Hop Brain Trust convened, there was no question that Rick Ross would emerge as the biggest boss of them all.
